Skins Webisode competition winner UPDATE.

Skins Web-isode Update 08/07/09

Last year e4.com decided to recruit and reward some brand spanking new talent, by asking you the skins fans to create something for us.

The prize was for one writer, director, costume and set designer to work with Company Pictures (the makers of Skins) on a short film that would be shown on the web. More than that though, the reward was about mentoring and nurturing that new talent, by giving them the opportunity to work with a talented, experienced team; and even to work on the set of skins 3 for a week or two.

The winning writer was Danny Lovett and we had an interview with him at the time which is lower down the page, or click here.

Here at Screenwriters Festival we followed the story of the hunt for the writer in particular, and the lucky winner was Daniel Lovett.

We have a special preview clip of the film, called Brink, which he and the other winners created available for you to watch right here on the Screenwriters' Festival website.

If you enjoy it check out the whole film here...

The Third Series of Skins is currently being shown on Channel 4

Bristol Channel Gazer Wins Skins Competition
- Interview with winner Danny Lovett -

A couple of months back the Skins production team launched a competition to find a director, writer, production and costume designer for a mini-webisode that will use some of the new characters and link in with the current series.  Here we have and exclusive interview with the winner Danny Lovett by the Festival Director David Pearson.

Would you like to be able call yourself a Skins writer? First time screenwriter Danny Lovett did and sent the Skins script competition at E4  “Picking Up Benny”, which you can read here.  A jocular account about a couple of druggie young guys and their encounter with Benny, who has Down Syndrome. It won.  He has now won the chance to write a mini webisode of the feisty teenage drama.

Danny, whose previous screenwriting was “just messing about”, has already adjusted his expectations of life after university so that he is now  “shooting for the stars”,  a shift from his previous expectation that his life after university would, “end up stuck in middle management, wearing a tie, hating myself and arguing with a fat wife.”

Danny won the age limited competition at the heady vintage of “twenty years young”.  The fast-talking cheery scribe from Ifracombe, Devon, who  gazed out across the Bristol Channel in his formative youth, decided to check out the far side and crossed the water to Swansea University opposite to do his degree in Creative writing, where he then applied to E4 for this his first ever script competition.

Understandably delighted at the positive turn of events, Danny is fizzing with praise for the latest Skins series, which returns on E4 this week the 22nd February at 10pm.  “I used to watch some Skins episodes, and then when the latest series came along it was just blew me away. It’s really cool where it’s heading”.

He admires the Larry David school of comedy and his script was his attempt to “take a pop at druggies and their bizarre ways".  He has witnessed firsthand the curious reactions people have when they deal with those with Down’s syndrome, as one of his own family has the condition.  He likes humour that is routed in people’s reactions to events when “they are not sure how they will deal with it”.

Despite his understandable elation he is aware that a future in screenwriting will involve a lot of setbacks and turns downs. He says he is, “used to rejection.  I’m an ugly guy and I can cope with it.“

SWF wishes him well with his Skins episode and look forward to seeing his next effort.
